A Sure-fire Strategy for Scripture Memorization

By Worship Strategies

Okay—let’s talk about a key component that strengthens our daily worship of God: memorizing Scripture.

If you’re like most Christians, retaining Scripture can seem almost too overwhelming to achieve. After all, there are over 30,000 verses contained in the Bible—how do we even begin to memorize each one?

The best strategy for tackling Scripture memorization may or may not surprise you, but it’s one you’ve been using to learn ALL SORTS of things since you were an infant…

…it’s through SINGING.

Think about it—I’ll bet you can instantly recall the melody to this phrase:

“A, B, C, D, E, F, G….. H, I, J, K, L-M-N-O-P….”

Familiar, right?

For me, I sang a song to myself during my GRE examination to remember the quadratic formula—it was taught in my high school algebra class and I managed to remember it over 10 years later! I could go on with more examples, but you’re already seeing the powerful connection between singing and memory.

So, if we use singing as a strategy for learning concepts from our ABC’s all the way to advanced mathematics, why not use it to remember God’s Holy Word?

Lucky for you, there are some really FANTASTIC artists who are crafting songs that are perfect for you to use in your strategy for memorizing the Word. I highly recommend checking out artists like

- The Psalms Project

- Shane & Shane

- Keith & Kristin Getty

- Indelible Grace Music

There’s a ton of them out there.

One song in particular that has been a blessing in our local congregation is “Sing Unto the Lord,” written by André Lemieux and recorded by New Life Committee. It checks the main boxes:

1) It’s rooted in Scripture; and

2) It’s very singable. You can listen to it here:

Be blessed. 👊✌️

Want Our Help with Your Worship Ministry?

A big part of what we do at WORSHIP STRATEGIES is to help churches improve how they worship.

Practically, this looks like discipleship, leadership coaching, music instruction, and production advising to help your team grow and excel in their giftings to glorify God and edify His people.

The cool thing? We do this free of financial obligation for each church. We have a growing team of folks who support us in our work for YOU 🫵 and be a blessing to churches who need help but lack tangible resources for improvement.
