Strategies vs. Actions—Where Are You Missing the Mark?

By Worship Strategies

OK—it's time to come clean.

Since Worship Strategies began, the goal has been to equip worship team leaders and members with strategies to enhance their worship experiences, leading to greater empowerment and confidence. But it turns out, we've been talking about something else...

Our content has actually been focused on actions.

There's a difference between the two.

Think of strategy as the overarching, general framework to realize a goal or purpose. Actions are what are used to implement the strategy. Here's a brief example:

  •  The goal of our worship ministry is to lead God's people in authentic worship of and to Him.

  •  Our strategy for authentic worship is to offer our most excellent musicianship, keep the Gospel central in the words we sing, and create an accessible experience in which everyone can participate, regardless of their ability.

  •  The actions we take to implement our strategy are regular rehearsals and building of musical/production skills, maintaining focused study of the Word and discipleship, and curating/writing songs that reflect Gospel truths and are singable for all persons.

You might be realizing at this point that you probably lack a strong strategy for realizing your goals, or maybe your past actions have yielded only meager results. When you separate strategies and actions into a system where the latter supports the former, you become focused in your work—which ultimately leads to repeated wins for you and your team. To gain a clearer focus, get out a piece of paper and a pen (YES, DO IT NOW) and write down your answers to these questions:

  •  What is my team's objective? (the goal/purpose)

  •  What are the long-term pathways that lead to that objective? (the strategy)

  •  What do we do to follow those pathways? (the actions)

Once you break down this framework for your own situation, you then have concrete, visualized, and attainable actions that lead to a winning strategy, which then helps fulfill your primary goal.
