What Must I Do to Receive God's Blessing?
By Worship Strategies
Blessings from God: What comes to mind when you think of this phrase?
Maybe you see a picture of a talking head on a screen, holding a prayer shawl that has been personally blessed by a ministry that can be yours after you make your generous donation. Or maybe it's the result of you living your best life, becoming a better you, validated by a pouring of prosperity into your bank account.
We've been conditioned to believe that blessings manifest in material gain, but the Bible doesn't really support this. Sure, we see physical fruit born from faithful stewardship of resources, but in the grand scheme of things, there's only one, overarching blessing that comes from God, and it looks very different from what the modern world, and even some Christian leaders, would tell us.
But if this blessing isn't in the form of material gain, then what is it?
It's very simple: This single blessing is the quickening in your heart to believe and savor the truth of God's goodness, providence, and sovereignty, all given by His Holy Spirit.
This blessing comes when we:
Receive His Word through reading and teaching
Recite His Word back to Him through prayer and singing
Relive His Word through the observance of baptism and communion
It's important to reiterate that MERE MOTIONS DO NOT BRING BLESSING. The Spirit uses the receiving, reciting, and reliving of His Word to stir our hearts to hold fast to His truth, bestowing comfort, assurance, peace, joy, hope, and faithfulness as His divine fruits.
This blessing in our corporate worship echoes how God's people, the Israelites, received these words from Aaron and the Levite priests whenever they came before the Lord:
"'The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.' So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.” (Numbers 6:24-27, ESV)
Notice there was no mention of material wealth, health, and prosperity?
Instead, God give His promise to faithfully bless His people with peace, grace, and knowing of us, from the days of the Old Testament into our present, and into the future ahead. When our mindset is realigned around what God's blessing truly is, it reshapes how we worship, and in turn, redirects our preparation for how we lead congregations in singing.
Choose songs that relish the revealing of God's truth, goodness, providence, majesty, and sovereignty. Your songs should express adoration of Him, confess your faults AND your hope through faith in His redemptive work, thanking Him for His mercy and grace, and sending up requests to Him. In addition, explore ways that you can incorporate the reading of scripture and collective prayers throughout the singing portion of the worship service—you can smoothly transition between songs while keeping the Word permeating in your praise to the Lord.
Be blessed 👊✌️
